Abstract
Urinary taurine levels were estimated in 16 mentally retarded children before and after celastrus oil therapy. Twelve children showed a significant decrease in urinary taurine levels after 6 months of drug trial, compared to the levels before therapy. Three of the twelve children also demonstrated a definite improvement in general I.Q. However, the remaining children showed no improvement in I.Q. Since celastrus oil is known to improve the learning and memory process, and taurine is also involved in memory functions, it is concluded that celastrus oil has a beneficial effect on the learning and memory process in mentally retarded children
