Abstract

The present study is aimed to evaluate the role of serum enzymes especially LDH and ALP as tumor markers in brain tumor patients. For the quantitative estimation of LDH and ALP the study group included 78 patients with intracranial neoplasms. follow-up study was carried out in 25 cases. the enzymatic activity of LDH is proportional to the rate of production of NADH. So the amount of NADH produced was determined. The kinetic analysis of the ALP fraction was followed by the colorimetric measurement of rate of formation of p-nitrophenol. The various types of brain tumors included in this study were glioma, meningioma, acoustic neurinoma and other types which included a few cases of medulloblastoma, secondary tumors and craniopharyngioma. No significant change was observed in LDH and ALP concentrations when compared to the control valaues, in pre-treatment as well as post-treatment cases. LDH and ALP serum enzymes are found to be tumor markers of very limited value in patients with brain tumors.
