Abstract
Adequate nutrition is very important during school age years. NFHS III in 2005-06 (India) reported that 42% of children are stunted and prevalence of Iron and Vitamin A deficiencies stands at 75% and 28% respectively. UNDP in 2003 stated that supplementation of foods rich in Protein, Vitamin A and Iron given to children over a period of two months has proven to increase height and weight in children and shown a rapid catch up growth. Deficiencies of vitamin A, iron, and zinc affect over one-half of the world’s population. Progress has been made to control micronutrient deficiencies through supplementation and food fortification, but new approaches are needed, especially to reach the rural poor. Bio-fortification (enriching the nutrition contribution of staple crops through plant breeding) is one option. Home fortification being another. (Nestel. P, 2007).
