Abstract

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, ‘the disease of the millennium’ has affected people of all age groups and of all socio economic strata in the society. This disease has had a major impact on the socioeconomic resources in the developing countries. In this chapter, the focus would be on (a) risk factors which facilitate the perinatal transmission of the virus from mother to the child (b) interventions needed to prevent the perinatal transmission of the virus (c) role of breast feeding in the resource poor setting.
