In Adaptive fast block motion estimation search patterns of different shape have significant impact on its complexity and distortion rate. A square-shaped search pattern is commonly adopted in many popular fast algorithms e.g. Cross Search, Logarithmic Search, Hierarchical Search etc.. Diamond and Hexagon shaped search pattern in motion estimation have exhibited much better search speed when compared to above mentioned algorithms. An enhancement to Hexagon is enhanced-hexagon search which further reduce the number of search points and achieves high computational speed. This paper discuses adaptive fast block motion estimation techniques, Diamond, Hexagon and enhancement to Hexagon search. For each of these techniques, their implementations details, their complexity, advantages and drawbacks are discussed. Simulation results are generated using standard test sequences
