In a digital video the motion between successive frame is discrete, to integer positions. However in real-life video, the motion of an object is continuous. In such scenario the integer pixel motion model fails to capture the exact motion. The sub-pixel motion model overcomes the above said limitation, but at the expense of computational complexity. The proposed work drastically reduces the complexity by predicting the direction for sub-pixel shift using the available information during the integer pixel motion estimation. There by sub-pixel candidate search positions are reduced from eight to two, at the cost of imperceptible quality loss (0.0038 to 0.3930 of MAD over a low, medium and high motion content standard test sequences).
