Almost all the diseases affecting mankind are either due to a defect in the gene or due to an interaction of gene with the environment. A treatment, which involves the transfer of genes to diseased individuals for therapeutic purposes, has come to be known as Gene therapy. It is a field still in a primitive stage of its development and the medical field including dentistry is just begining to sense the possibilitites if gene transfer could provide specific and highly corrective treatment. These are the tools available today which are merely the building blocks - a start for the future.
