Abstract
Diabetes is a complex disorder , caused due to deficiency or complete lack of insulin resulting in derangement in body's lipid, protein and carbohydrate metabolism. Alcoholism is a widespread problem among the diabetics as well as non-diabetics and alcoholism is associated with an increase in the serum concentrations of triglycerides , high-density lipoprotein and a decrease in serumlow-density -lipoprotein concentration. Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is found to be an useful marker in patients with diabetes as it predicts the risk of cardiovascular disease. The present study was conducted in 74 diabetic patients including both alcoholics and non-alcoholics to compare their lipid profile and AIP.According to our study ,AIP could be used as a simple parameter to early assessment of risk for development of atherosclerosis and also it gives as an idea about overall glycemic status in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic diabetic patients.
