Abstract

The present study was carried out to determine the effect of home based exercise training in improving pulmonary function and severity of symptoms in children with mild to moderate asthma. It was a uncontrolled experimental design study at Dr TMA Pai Rotary Hospital, Udupi, Karnataka. A total of 9 subjects (11 subjects, 2 dropouts) were recruited for the study, six girls and 3 boys between 8 to 16 years. Baseline evaluation including pulmonary function test and functional severity index was carried out in all the children and were asked to carry out either bicycling or skipping in the home setup. The intensity, duration and frequency was prescribed according to their initial fitness status. Pulmonary function test (PFT) and Functional severity index (FSI) were assessed prior to the beginning of home exercise programme and repeated after 6 weeks. Significant improvement in pulmonary function test — FEV1 (p<0.001), FEV1/FVC (p<0.001) FVC (p<0.006) FEF 25-75% (p<0.000) and functional severity index (p<0.008) was observed. In conclusion, home-based exercise programme is effective in improving pulmonary function and severity of symptoms in children with mild to moderate asthma. But these findings need to be confirmed by further studies on larger population as randomized control trails.
