Correlation between levels of NT-proBNP and cardiac function after percutaneous balloon mitral valvotomy in mitral stenosis

Abstract

N terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP) has been shown to correlate with hemodynamic parameters in patients with mitral stenosis and few studies have focused on its relation with structural and functional changes in the heart that occur after percutaneous balloon mitral valvotomy. The present study was done to investigate the relation between the fall of plasma NT-proBNP levels, the structural changes in left atrium(LA) and the ventricular function one month post valvotomy. A total of 10 patients were enrolled into the study. Echocardiographic parameters and NT -proBNP levels were estimated one hour before the procedure and repeated exactly one month after the procedure. It was shown that left atrial diameter, mitral pressure gradients, right ventricular systolic pressure and NT pro-BNP levels had dropped significantly one month after valvotomy. However a correlation between the change in left atrial diameter and NT- pro BNP was not statistically significant (P value of 0.734). We conclude that NT -proBNP can be used as a prognostic index during follow up of patients one month after percutaneous balloon mitral valvotomy.
