Abstract
Aims and Objectives:A descriptive study was undertaken to determine anthropometric profile and nutritional status based on body mass index (BMI), Waist hip ratio (WHR) and Waist circumference (WC) of adult population of Manipal, Karnataka, India. A total of 143 adults (aged 20-45 years) from the general population were studied. Anthropometric measurements including height, weight, waist circumferences as well as BMI and WHR were assessed. Dietary intake of the subjects was studied with the help of food frequency questionnaire. Chi-square test and paired t-test were used when appropriate. Results:46%of the males were found to be overweight/ obese while 33% of the females were found to be overweight/ obeseaccording to BMI. 18% males and 25% of the females had an increased WHR. There was a statistically significant association found between BMI and waist circumference (p=0.000) and between WHR and waist circumference in case of males (p=0.035). Physical activity with WHR in case of females was found to be statistically significant (p=0.039).Socio-economic status with BMI in case of females was found to be statistically significant (p=.048) while in case of WHR it was found to be statistically significant in case of both females (p=.029) and males (p=0.026). Conclusion: With urbanization and economic development, a nutritional transition characterized by improved dietary habits, improvement in socio-economic status and increasingly sedentary lifestyles have been observed which has contributed to the increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity among the adult population of Manipal, Karnataka.
