Abstract

A separated instrument in the root canal denotes a fractured file, a segment of lentulo, a broken gates-glidden drill or a carrier based obturator. It could be due to various factors related to the tooth, instrument or operator .The separated fragment in the coronal 3rd of the canal blocks the access. This prevents thorough cleaning and shaping procedure of the major portion of the canal apical to the level of separation. This is significant in a tooth which is nonvital and associated with periapicalpathosis, as it affects the final outcome of the endodontic therapy. This case report is about the successful use of a new innovative technique of using a modified gates-glidden drill and disposable syringe needle for retrieving a fragment of the file tightly wedged in the coronal 3rd of the root canal of a maxillary right canine.
