Abstract

A metallic obstruction in the root canal denotes a foreign body lodgment or a fragment of a separated instrument like file, lentulo, gates-glidden drill, carrier based obturator etc. It could be at a cervical 3rd, middle 3rd or apical 3rd level of a root canal. Depending on the level of obstruction, it can blocks the access and prevent thorough cleaning and shaping procedure of the canal apical to the level of obstruction. This is crucial especially in a nonvital tooth associated with or without a periapicalpathosis, as it affects the final outcome of the endodontic therapy. Therefore an attempt should be always made to either bypass or retrieve such an obstruction. Retrieval is attempted when bypassing fails. Masserran technique is one of the many techniques suggested for the retrieval of a metallic obstruction. However, it has limited success in a posterior tooth. This case report illustrates successful application of Masserann technique to retrieve a metallic obstruction from the middle 3rd of a mandibular first premolar root canal.
