Abstract
Aim: To study the effectiveness of community based camp approach in the treatment of persons with Alcohol dependence syndrome. Methods: This was a prospective study. Experimental Research Design pre and post-test with control group was adopted. 30 Respondents were drawn from community based de-addiction camp(CBC) in Sasthana, Kundapur and another 30 hospital based de-addiction camp (HBC), Doddanagudde, Udupi Disitrict, Karnataka. CBC was held for 7 days and hospital based de-addiction camp held for 10 days. Tools used: AUDIT, SAD-Q, WHO-Quality of life-BREF, SOCRATES. Statistics Procedure: Chi square test, ‘t’ test, one-way ANOVA, Survival analysis, Effect Size analysis, correlation and regression analysis. Written informed consent was obtained from the participants before the study. Results: Study revealed that both the camp approach intervention was effective. There was a positive trend in community based de-addiction camp towards abstinence. CBC have shown effective in increasing the number of follow up (p<0.05). Effect size was medium(r=0.36). HBC was effective in decreasing the quantity of intake of alcohol during the relapse (p<0.01). The effect size of the Hospital based de-addiction camp in reducing the intake of alcohol during relapse was larger (r=0.54). Community based de-addiction camp intervention shown small effect with regard to enhancing quality of life (r=0.27).
