Abstract

Al-Zn-Mg alloys are precipitation harden able and are therefore' amenable for therrnomechanical treatment since only age' hardenable nonferrous alloys are subjected to TMT. Al-Zn-Mg alloys are widely used in aerospace industries inspite of the drawbacks· ·s.uch as· sensitivity to stress, susceptibility to stress corrosion, poor weldability and poor fatigue 'resistance. TMT can be utiliszed to improve the properties since the aluminium alloy matrix develops subgrains during. deformation. TMT is gaining imortance as an integral part of the production rout-e for high performance preciption hardenable Al-Zn-Mg alloys. In the present work. superiority orTMT alloys over conventionally aged alloys is ascertained and reported.
