Abstract

This paper attempts to evolve a practical methodology based on pedagogic-stylistic approach for developing Narrative Techniques among the learners in ESL classes. The adaptability of stylistic approach as a pedagogical tool in the teaching of literature, and to analyse its benefits on the language learner is one possible solution to develop language awareness in the classes where English is taught as a second / foreign language. The Pedagogic-Stylistic Approach will be immensely be useful to further the learners’ competence in developing their productive skills such as interpretation and narration in the classrooms- be English is taught as EFL /ESL or a mother tongue.. The learners’ ability to investigate how the resources of a language code are put to use in the production of actual messages has to be developed by the teacher. As a try-out, Frost’s poem ‘Dust of Snow’ was supplied as a literary text to the learners for their interpretations. The learners were encouraged to discover the distinctiveness in the use of language, foregrounding, and phonological patterns. For developing their interpretation certain cognitive cues were supplied. Such activities- identifying author’s style, patterns in the text, and bringing unusual syntax to normal English have become attractive in my institute. The learners with such classroom practices enjoy learning language and literature, and they can apply their language competency in various lifesituations. This approach will help them narrate a story or an event with confidence.
