Abstract

The main emphasis of metallurgists has been to process the materials to obtain the balanced mechanical properties for the given applications. One of the processing routes to alter the properties is heat treatment. Corrosion is a major degradation process by which the components and structures in industries and infrastructures fail prematurely and causes significant economic losses. The consequences of corrosion are many and they affect the safe, reliable and efficient operations of the equipment and structures. This work supplies the additional information to the design engineer to use the same material in heat treated conditions for better mechanical or corrosion resistance property. In the present study mechanical properties like wear and microstructure of AISI 50110 steel are found out in as bought as well as heat treated conditions such as annealed and hardened using wear testing machine and optical microscope. Inhibition action of thiourea on the corrosion property of steel in as bought as well as heat treated conditions in 1 N HCl solution at 300 C room temperature has been investigated using potentiodynamic polarization technique.
