Abstract

Fluorescent tubes have carried the bulk of lighting in offices, factories and public buildings due to their relatively high efficiency and long life. But with recent developments in the field of lighting, Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) have increased to levels approaching those of fluorescent tubes. An 18W LED tube is presented with an improved design elaborately considering the proper design steps to be considered while designing, setting an old LED sample as a target to improve the design and 40W OSRAM FTL is used as to set a benchmark for the target Lux level. A case study is presented as a DIAlux project for both of the FTL and the LED tube and the performance results are compared and cost saving analysis is done to show that 40W FTL can be replaced by an 18W LED tube avoiding the drawbacks of FTL technology, including harmonics, sensitivity to supply disturbances causing light flicker.
