Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is a distributed and self-organizing network of static and mobile nodes. In MANET, routing protocols are essential to route the packets from source node to the destination node via intermediate nodes. In this paper, performance evaluation of flat routing protocols such as Ad-hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV), Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV), and Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) is conducted. Performance metrics such as throughput, energy consumption and number of nodes are considered to analyse the efficiency of the mentioned routing protocols. Results are obtained for different types of simulation environments and found that AODV provides considerably good throughput but lacks in utilizing energy. Modification for AODV called as Optimal-AODV (OAODV) is proposed to overcome the problem of energy utilization. OAODV finds the optimal path for packet transmission by considering residual energy of the next hop and available bandwidth. It is found that proposed OAODV performs better and utilizes energy prudently.
