Abstract

Traditional retrofitting methods are usually based on mass reduction and increase in stiffness but these methods are often very costly, time consuming and at times less effective. Thus retrofitting of buildings with seismic dampers has gained much of an importance nowadays. Fluid viscous dampers (FVD) are now vastly being used for retrofitting purposes. In the present paper FVD with upper toggle bracing configuration has been studied. A nine storey RCC frame was subjected to different ground motions and analysed using the software ETABS to obtain its seismic behavior without retrofitting and with linear FVD retrofitting with a toggle brace configuration. The results were then compared with respect to peak storey displacements and inter-storey drifts, roof accelerations and pseudo spectral accelerations. It was found that retrofitting with FVD has significantly reduced the seismic demand.
