Abstract

Open first storey is a typical feature in the modern multi storey constructions in urban India Such features are highly undesirable in buildings built in seismically active areas, many earthquakes in the past, have demonstrated the potential hazard associated with soft first storey buildings. Since the soft first storey becomes weak compared to the stories above and the soft first storey is composed of only columns while the other stories are divided by unreinforced masonry infill. Structurally those unbalances are unhealthy. In the present paper, an investigation has been performed to examine the behavior of various alternative models of same reinforced concrete moment resisting frame building for soft first storey building provided the unreinforced masonry walls in the storey above for equivalent static analysis and multi-modal dynamic
