Abstract

In this paper, an embankment on soft soils incorporating prefabricated vertical drains is analysed using Modified Cam Clay (MCC) model. often used to speed up consolidation and to increase shear strength under embankments on soft soil. The soil structure with vertical drains is a three dimensional axisymmetric model. However a three dimensional axisymmetric model is more time consuming and inconvenient. Hence the three dimensional axisymmetric models in finite element analysis is converted into two dimensional plane strain model. Displacement and pore pressure in soil are coupled and the resulting equations are solved to obtain the displacement and pore pressure in soil at various time intervals from the beginning of construction till the end of consolidation
