Abstract

The effect of the non-Newtonian behavior of lubricants, resulting from the addition of polymers, on the performance of flexibly supported hydrodynamic journal bearings is investigated. The sub-synchronous whirl stability on two symmetrical finite journal bearings has been studied using the non-linear transient analysis technique. A quantitative comparison for journal bearings with different L/D ratios, support stiffness and damping has been provided. An attempt has been made to evaluate the mass parameter, a measure of stability by using a non-linear time transient analysis. It is seen that the plain journal bearing can be designed with a flexible damped support so that the stability is greatly extended beyond the rigid support stability.
