Diabetes mellitus is an important risk factor for periodontitis.Literature reveals that there is a vicious cycle of diabetes and periodontitis which exacerbate each other. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is more than twice as high in patients with periodontitis compared to healthy subjects. The association between the two is so strong that periodontitis has been proposed to be the sixth complication of diabetes mellitus. Periodontal disease causes generation of inflammatory cytokines likeC-reactive protein, Interleukin-6 and Tumour necrosis factor α,the latter being responsible for worsening insulin resistance and diabetes. These overwhelming immune reactions lead to selfdestruction of periodontal tissues.Prevention, early diagnosis and consequent treatment of periodontal disease is imperative to reduce the concentration of inflammatory mediators which also helps in diabetic control. The present case reports highlight the oral manifestations of undiagnosed diabetes mellitus and improvement in diabetic status of the patients following periodontal therapy.
