Abstract

Background: Potassium Nitrate has been widely used in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity. Its popularity is attributed to its effect on nerve conduction. A less understood aspect is its occlusive effect on dentinal tubules. Objective: The present study tries to evaluate the effects of application of Potassium Nitrate viscous solution at concentrations of 5%, 10% and 20% clinically and by using Scanning Electron Microscopy. Materials and Methods: 30 patients with 34 hypersensitive teeth were randomly subjected to treatment with one of the three concentrations [5%, 10% or 20%] of the therapeutic agent, designated as A, C and B for the purpose of blinding. Subjective, tactile, evaporative and thermal responses of teeth were evaluated at baseline, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks. A scanning electron microscopic study was also carried out on specimens of dentinal discs which were treated with 1% citric acid and subjected to application of Potassium Nitrate concentrations used in the clinical study. The data was analyzed using repeated measures of ANOVA. Results: 20% Potassium Nitrate was superior to the other two concentrations, in terms of reduction in sensitivity, duration of effect and obliteration of tubules. Conclusion: A higher concentration of Potassium Nitrate [20%] may show sustained relief of dentinal hypersensitivity.
