Abstract

A chalcone,1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one,abbreviatedasCDAC was synthesizedbytheClaisen–Schmidtcondensationmethodandsinglecrystalsweregrownbythe slow aporationtechniqueatambienttemperature.Thestructuralconfirmationwasdoneusing 1H-NMR,FT-IR,powderXRDandsinglecrystalXRDstudies.Thecrystalcrystallizesinthemonoclinic pace groupP21/c with a¼33.082(3) A˚ , b¼14.4722(13) A˚ , c¼6.0799(5) A˚ , a¼901, b¼92.030(4)1, g¼901 and Z¼8. ThehightemperatureDSCshowsaphasetransitionattemperature141.53 1C that correspondstothemeltingpointofthecrystal.ThisisconfirmedinDTAstudywhichshowsan endothermicdipcorrespondingtothismeltingpoint.TheopticalstudiesweremadewithUV–visible and Z-scantechniques.Thenonlinearabsorptionandnonlinearrefractioncoefficientsofthesample were obtainedbyperformingtheZ-scanexperimentalmeasurements.Therealandimaginarypartsof third-orderbulksusceptibility w(3) were evaluated.Thecoefficientofnonlinearrefraction(g) ofthe compoundisfoundtobenegativeasrevealedbythesignatureofclosedaperturedata.
