Abstract

The corrosion inhibition effect of Ethyl-2-phenyl-hydrozono-3-oxobutyrate (EPHO) on the corrosion of AA 6061 in 0.5M hydrochloric acid medium at 30, 40 and 50 ⁰C have been investigated using potentiostatic polarization techniques (Tafel extrapolation and Linear polarization). It is observed from the results that EPHO is an efficient inhibitor with 91 % inhibition efficiency in the range of temperatures studied. Leftward and downward shifts in Tafel plots are observed on the addition of the inhibitor, indicating that EPHO inhibits the corrosion process and it is a cathodic inhibitor. Corrosion rate increases and inhibition efficiency decreases with increase in temperature. Results obtained by Tafel extrapolation and Linear polarization methods are in good agreement. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the AA 6061 surface was found to obey Temkin’s adsorption isotherm that verifies the assumption of mono-layer adsorption on a uniform homogeneous composite surface with an interaction in the adsorption layer.
