Background of study: Polypharmacy and inappropriate use of psychotropic drugs have been described in the young as well as the elderly. Whether these prescription related issues differ between the elderly and the young has not been well studied which is important to develop specific measures to improve the quality of drug use. Objective: The objective of this study is to describe the psychotropic drug utilization in psychiatry inpatients with regard to age and gender in a tertiary health care setting in India. Research Methodology: The hospital records of all psychiatry inpatients above 18 years of age admitted over a period of two years were studied for use of various psychotropic drugs with regard to age and gender. Patients’ ≥ 65 years of age were considered elderly. Results: 12.2% of the total sample comprised of elderly patients. 41.8% of the patients were females with the percentage being significantly more in the elderly group. Increased use of anxiolytics in younger patients was statistically significant (p<0.001). More than one psychotropic drug was used in 75.4% of younger patients as compared to 49.2% in elderly while the extent of polypharmacy with regard to gender was similar. Conclusion: Although the incidence of polypharmacy was less, the high rate of utilization of anxiolytics especially in the younger patients at the time of hospital discharge needs to be further studied. While problems related to psychotropic drug utilization are common across age and gender groups their differential distribution in specific healthcare setting and geographic areas needs to be considered while designing interventions to improve drug use.
